How much CBD should I take? Cannabidiol Oil Dosing

While there are many articles about the benefits of CBD, there are few that specifically focus on dosage. Whether you’re a first-time user or an expert, understanding how CBD works can be confusing. Common questions we hear are, “How much should I take?” “What is the right dosage for me?” and “Can I overdose?”.

We are here to help debunk some myths and bring light to proper dosage practices.

What is the recommended dosage of CBD Oil?

The reason you may not know the recommended dosage you should take is because it is only recently that doctors and scientists have started to develop dosing schedules for Cannabidiol Oil. Health Canada has yet to create a recommended daily intake for hemp products (like ointments, creams, lotions, oils, balms, salves), which means CBD does not have an official ‘serving size’. There are only suggestions based on factors like gender, age, weight, the reason for taking CBD and the CBD concentration.

Can you overdose on CBD?

Before we walk through you through proper dosage practices, it is important to note that it is nearly impossible to overdose on CBD. In order for CBD to be toxic, you would need to ingest almost 20,000 mg of CBD oil in a very short time. To put that in perspective, that would mean taking 7 full bottles of our highest dosage bottles (3000 mg) in one sitting.

Studies have found that Cannabidiol oil is known to interact with certain medications, so make sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist if you’re currently on any prescriptions. While the chances are low, there could be side effects associated with using CBD in high dosage for extended periods of time such as itchiness, nausea or drowsiness.

If you are experiencing any side effects, please see a physician immediately.

How do I take CBD?

When taking Think Botanicals CBD Oil, it’ll be dispensed via dropper from our CBD tinctures. Just fill the dropper, administer the oil under your tongue, and hold it there for 30 to 90 seconds before swallowing.

How many drops should I take?

Everyone is different and uses CBD for different purposes. To know how many drops to take, you need to know how many milligrams there are in a single dropper, but the number of milligrams in a single dropper changes based off of the CBD concentration.

For example, one dropper of our 500 mg bottles dispenses 16.7mg of CBD oil and one dropper of our 2500 mg bottles dispenses 83.5 mg per dropper. You can see the major difference between the two. It’s important to know how much is in a single dropper in order to calculate correctly, which is why we list the single dropper milligrams in our product descriptions here.

The best way to figure out how many drops you should take is with a dosage calculator. If math isn’t your strong suit, no need to worry, you are here for symptom relief, not complicated equations. Luckily there are a lot of great resources online – and we should add, it’s very simple. All you need to know is the size of the bottle in milliliters (the average size of most bottles is 30 mL) and the number of total milligrams of CBD in the bottle.

Depending on the calculator, you may also need to include your gender, age, weight, and the reason for taking CBD. Here is a recommended dosage chart:

For example:

500mg bottle - 1 drop = 16.7g

150lbs, medium pain = 15mg = ~1 dropper

Observing Your Own Best CBD Dosage

Remember that you can always decrease and increase as needed. Start off small and give yourself time to figure out your own minimum effective dose. What works for someone else might not work for you. For example, if you take a 5 mg dose in the morning and notice little to no positive effects, take 8 or 10 mg in the afternoon/evening.

Observe how long the effects of the CBD last and consider documenting. Many people, depending on their pain level, find a single daily dose is more than enough to provide relief, so there is not always a need to take an additional afternoon or evening dose.

Please keep in mind that all calculations are only recommendations and you should consult your doctor if you are worried or unsure about dosage.
